Thanksgiving today is primarily identified as a secular holiday. It is traditional for families and groups of friends to get together for a large meal. This often consists of a turkey, stuffing, different types of potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and maize and other seasonal vegetables. The meal also often includes pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns. Some parades or festivities also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season. Many football games are played. Some people have trips out of town and some visit friends and family. Most government offices, businesses, schools and other organizations are closed on Thanksgiving Day.

Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks to God for a good harvest, to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community. At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season.
